Både islam og kristendom er missionerende religioner i den betydning, at de ønsker at kommunikere deres budskab til andre mennesker og invitere dem til at blive en del af hhv den muslimske ummah og den kristne kirke.

Da'wah betyder "et råb" eller "et kald" og betegner muslimers arbejde for at udbrede kendskabet til islam.Mission betyder "sendelse" eller "udsendelse" og betegner kirkens sendelse for at vidne om evangeliet.
